The Migaki Bake or Japanese horsehair brush is the traditional brush used in surface preperation for traditional Japanese patinas and polishing.
 
It is made of horse hair bound by a cotton string. It is used by creating a slurry of different types of grits, or charcoal or powders and loading them onto the brush and scrubbing by hand. The finish created is almost impossible to replicate with modern tools.
